Our language school is called Centro de Línguas de Lagos and was opened in 1982. We provide language courses to the local community, companies and visitors to the Algarve.
The language school is recognised by the Portuguese Ministry of Education, which means that our courses have been approved and all our teachers required to have a university degree and a postgraduate qualification in language teaching.
The languages taught use communicative language teaching techniques, are Portuguese, English, French and German. Our experienced teachers understand the importance of ensuring students make good progress and achieve their goals. The teachers and the administrative staff also listen to what students really want from a language course.
We’re in the historical centre of Lagos, possibly the most beautiful coastal town in the Algarve, and only a 50-minute drive from Faro airport. Over the years Lagos has become a vibrant town attracting people from all over the world who come to enjoy the stunning beaches, mild climate, excellent restaurants, golf and surfing.
Most of our students learning English, French or German want to improve their language skills for their work or studies. Students learning Portuguese have moved from abroad to the Algarve, to retire or to work, and understand how necessary it is to speak Portuguese to integrate fully into the local community or workplace.
Students can choose from several language course options: general group courses or private lessons and courses for companies in the school or at the company. Since the language school opened, the one thing that stands out is that most students at elementary levels like to have explanations given in their own language.
This is why, for example, the Portuguese beginners’ courses are taught by teachers fluent in English. The aim of Portuguese lessons is to have the students speaking European Portuguese as quickly as possible and the teacher will save time by explaining some points in English. Obviously, any English used eventually disappears as the levels become more advanced.
